Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ) has bought LANNET (Tel Aviv, Israel) from Madge Networks NV (Wexham, Slough, England) for $117 million. LANNET makes Ethernet and asynchronous-transfer-mode switches for campus networks. The sale is expected to be complete by the end of September. LANNET makes Ethernet and asynchronous-transfer-mode switches for campus networks. The sale is expected to be complete by the end of September. In other company news, Lucent is building a research-and-development facility in Makahuri, Japan, near Tokyo. The facility will develo¥prototypes for passive-optical-networking systems. Lucent will provide optical networking equipment to Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (Tokyo, Japan) and Bayernwerk Netkom (Munich, Germany) and plans research centers in Nuremberg, Germany, and Hilversum, the Netherlands.
