In this episode of Photonics Hot List...

Researchers are now using an enhanced laser imaging approach to restore the vibrancy of the world’s oldest and most significant artwork. The approach, called pump-probe microscopy, allows more accurate monitoring of pigment changes and degradation.

A new system capable of hyperspectral imaging in the visible range and beyond is helping researchers view biological samples in even the deepest and smallest spaces. This rigid endoscope technology can change between a vast range of wavelengths within a millisecond.

A team in China has achieved a strong-field laser physics first by enhancing the focus of petawatt (or ultra-intense) lasers. Using hyperbolic mirrors, the technique significantly enhances a petawatt laser’s experimental capabilities and maximizes performance.
