Jena, Germany--Jenoptik’s Lasers & Material Processing division opened its production facility for high-power semiconductor lasers in the Berlin-Adlershof Technology Park. The expansion totals a $12.5 million investment by the company's optoelectronics group and marks its largest to date.
The expanded facility will commence operations at the beginning of 2013, developing and manufacturing semiconductor lasers and laser bars, which are used as a base material for high-power diode lasers. The expansion will enable the company to meet growing demand, particularly from Asia. With the expansion, production capacities will more than double.
Jenoptik chairman Michael Mertin notes that sales with the base material for high-power diode lasers have tripled since 2006. To continue to meet this demand, the company plans to invest a total of approximately $43.7 million through the remainder of this year.
