EPIC organizes photonic integrated circuit (PIC) workshop for December

Brussels, Belgium--EPIC brings competitors together for a workshop entitled "Meet or eat? Collaboration and/or Competition in Photonic Integrated Circuits?"

Brussels, Belgium--The European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) has organized an industrial photonic integrated circuit (PIC) workshop entitled "Meet or eat? Collaboration and/or Competition in Photonic Integrated Circuits?" To be held on December 5-6, 2013 in Zurich, Switzerland, the workshop is strictly limited to 80 attendees and 1 representative per company and will cover a broad range of PIC issues per the workshop description. The event is sponsored by SWISSPHOTONICS and IBM.

Silicon Photonics is CMOS compatible, while laser source integration is still a technical challenge. InP-based devices are unmatched regarding the very versatile range of building blocks, including commercial grade lasers, but it lacks the leverage of existing CMOS infrastructure. The workshop will openly discuss InP and silicon photonics integrated technologies.

EPIC director general Carlos Lee says, "In the semiconductor industry ‘co-opetition’ is common practice and competitors (or competing technologies) work together to ensure that the overall market is sustainable. Co-opetition means that you cooperate in the morning, and you compete in the afternoon. At EPIC, companies work together for a sustainable long-term profitable market and technology advancement. I am glad that we were able to get 80% of the key companies in PIC to attend the meeting."

The three organized sessions cover the following:

Session I: 3-5 (III-V), Si photonics, and TriPleX: individual strengths, challenges and opportunities. How will we make it work together?

Session II: Approaches for combining 3-5 and Si, add functionality to 3-5 photonics. Heterogeneous versus hybrid integration.

Session III: Assembly and packaging of densely integrated photonic devices: How to reduce the cost of system-level integration? Integration of electronics and photonics?
