    Laser Technology Alliance formed

    Pennsylvania State University Applied Research Laboratory (ARL; University Park, PA) and the US Department of Energy Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL; Livermore, CA) are joining forces to form a National Laser Technology Alliance. Designed to combine the ARL`s expertise in laser processing of materials with LLNL`s ability to develo¥new lasers, the alliance will work on such programs as developing new lasers for medical applications, including dental drilling and middle-ear, eye, and brain surgery. Other potential projects include using high-power lasers for high-speed metal drilling with military equipment and for cutting u¥obsolete weapons without the risk of explosion.
