The Genesis family of lasers from Coherent Inc., (Santa Clara, CA), introduces a stream-lined model specifically targeted for space-conscious OEM instrumentation applications. The new Genesis CX 355 STM Compact is a continuous wave, 355 nm laser with TEM00 beam quality, 50% smaller in size as compared to existing Genesis lasers. It is available with output powers of up to 100 mW (standard model available up to 250 mW), while the laser head measures only 250 mm x 51 mm x 138 mm. Some applications for this laser include flow cytometry for cell sorting and counting, confocal microscopy, and high throughput drug discovery.

PRESS RELEASE

New Compact OEM Ultraviolet laser for Life Science Applications

Santa Clara, Calif., April 18, 2012 – The newest addition to the Genesis family of lasers for life sciences from Coherent Inc., (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR), is a stream-lined model specifically targeted for space-conscious OEM instrumentation applications. The new Genesis™ CX 355 STM Compact is a continuous wave, 355 nm laser with TEM00 beam quality, scaled down by 50% in size as compared to existing Genesis OEM ultraviolet lasers. It is available with output powers of up to 100 mW (standard model available up to 250 mW), while the laser head measures only 250 mm x 51 mm x 138 mm (9.85 in x 2 in x 5.45 in).

Based on Coherent’s unique optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology, Genesis lasers are the first commercial, solid-state alternative to ion lasers for applications needing true, continuous wave, ultraviolet output. Other solid-state UV lasers in this wavelength and power range can only deliver quasi-CW output with extremely high peak power that can damage live cells. Genesis lasers offer several advantages over ion lasers including solid-state stability and reliability, an order of magnitude increase in electrical efficiency, no need for water cooling, a very small footprint, and the ability to adjust (10% to100 %) output power with no effect on beam pointing or beam quality. In addition, OPSL enables an ultra-low noise spec of < 0.1% (10 Hz to 100 MHz) for this UV laser.

Applications for the Genesis CX 355 STM Compact include flow cytometry for cell sorting and counting, and other fluorescence-based life sciences instrumentation such as confocal microscopy and high throughput drug discovery.

Founded in 1966, Coherent, Inc. is a Russell 2000 Index company and a world leader in providing laser-based solutions to the commercial and scientific research markets.
