Alcatel wins $33 million contract to link cities in Eastern Mediterranean
Alcatel Submarine Networks (Paris, France) has been awarded two contracts to build an undersea
communications network in the Eastern Mediterranean. The first contract involves a 760-km fiber pair operating at 2.5 Gbit/s, connecting Alexandria, Egypt, with Tartous, Syria. Under the terms of the
second contract, Alcatel will link Tartous with the Lebanese cities of Sa?da, Beirut, and Tripoli, via
two 622-Mbit/s fiber pairs. Alcatel will act as both supplier and installer, and both systems are slated for completion by early 1997.
