High-resolution flat-panel-display (FPD) developer Kopin (Taunton, MA) has entered an alliance with United Microelectronics (UMC) and its liquid-crystal-display (LCD) affiliate Unipac Optoelectronics (both Hsin Chu City, Taiwan) to establish volume production and accelerate market penetration of Kopin active-matrix LCDs (AMLCDs). Under the agreement, UMC and Unipac purchased 225,000 shares of Kopin common stock for about $3.7 million. Integrated-circuit-maker UMC will provide Kopin with wafer fabrication for AMLCD production devices, and the parties will collaborate on issues such as display packaging and testing.
