3D laser analysis to supplement gymnastics judging at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

The Japan Gymnastics Association and the Japanese technology company Fujitsu are working together to adapt the use of three-dimensional laser technology and data processing to the gymnastics judging system. As announced in a press release, they plan to conduct joint research on scoring support technology for gymnastics competitions.

As we have continued to highlight in our annual Laser Market Review & Forecast article and forecast, lasers continue to play a role in both industrial and mainstream consumer applications. The Tokyo Olympics will highlight 3D laser scanning to better judge gymnastic finesse. Apparently, this venue will also offer autonomous-vehicle taxi cabs which, as we all know, incorporate a variety of laser and photonic technologies including light detection and ranging (lidar) equipment. Let the games begin!
