A Fellow of the LIA is an individual who is widely recognized for exceptional professional contributions to both the laser community and the LIA. The LIA first presented the Schawlow Award in 1982 to recognize individuals who have made distinguished contributions to applications of lasers in science, industry, education and medicine. The recipient of the George M. Wilkening Award in Laser Safety is an individual who has made outstanding contributions to laser bioeffects research, development of human exposure limits and safety standards, and to applied laser safety. The recipient does not have to be a member of LIA, but sustained service to LIA can be one of the additional contributions considered. The R. James Rockwell, Jr. Educational Achievement Award
The recipient of the R. James Rockwell, Jr. Educational Achievement Award is an individual, organization, group, or institution of higher education that has made outstanding contributions to laser safety education. The recipient does not have to be a member of LIA, but sustained service to LIA can be one of the additional contributions considered. Gail Overton | Senior Editor (2004-2020)
Gail has more than 30 years of engineering, marketing, product management, and editorial experience in the photonics and optical communications industry. Before joining the staff at Laser Focus World in 2004, she held many product management and product marketing roles in the fiber-optics industry, most notably at Hughes (El Segundo, CA), GTE Labs (Waltham, MA), Corning (Corning, NY), Photon Kinetics (Beaverton, OR), and Newport Corporation (Irvine, CA). During her marketing career, Gail published articles in WDM Solutions and Sensors magazine and traveled internationally to conduct product and sales training. Gail received her BS degree in physics, with an emphasis in optics, from San Diego State University in San Diego, CA in May 1986.
