    The SmartPerf tool from Prima Power Laserdyne (Champlin, MN), available on all of the company's Nd:YAG and fiber laser systems, is designed for laser drilling patterns of holes in linear and cylindrical paths in 2D and 3D parts. The tool eliminates the need for acceleration and deceleration at each hole location for percussion drilling small-diameter (0.2–0.6mm) holes in turbine engine combustors. Thousands of holes can be produced quickly over a 3D surface in a single setup. The tool also reduces heat input to the workpiece, which is especially important when laser drilling thermal barrier and other coated high-temperature alloy metals.
