Coherent creates Center of Excellence for industrial laser processing systems
The Gilching, Germany micromachining and subsystem facility of Coherent has significantly expanded and relocated the company's laser marking group from nearby Gunding. This Center of Excellence, designated as Coherent Munich, will be a significant upgrade to the organization's applications and R&D capabilities, and affirms the company's commitment to the industrial materials processing and manufacturing segment.
Coherent Munich's primary focus will be twofold:
First, the center will supply high-performance, integration-ready laser-based subsystems servicing a wide range of precision industrial manufacturing and marking applications in medical device manufacturing, electronics packaging, and jewelry production. Specifically, this will include the development and production of fiber-, CO2-, and solid-state laser-based subsystems incorporating lasers, optics, software, and applications expertise.
Secondly, it will offer a complete product portfolio of laser machines to accomplish specific tasks, such as glass or tube cutting, precision welding of metals and polymers, black marking, roll-to-roll packaging, and others. Its new ExactSeries offerings, which bring innovative hardware, software, and process technology to cutting, welding, marking, surface treatment, and specialty applications, is the latest embodiment of the ongoing integration of ROFIN expertise into Coherent.
"Combining our Gunding and Gilching operations brings a wider range and depth of expertise under one roof, enabling us to better accomplish this," says Thomas Merk, Executive VP and General Manager of Industrial Lasers and Systems. "We believe the creation of this Center of Excellence will therefore enable us to serve a broader range of applications with even more competitive subsystems and turnkey solutions."
