Photonics Hot List: May 24, 2024

May 24, 2024
In this episode: LiDAR advances hurricane damage assessment, 3D holography possible with CGH and iPhone, and laser-based computer processing eyes the future.

Assessing damage quickly and accurately after a hurricane is critical for proper cleanup and future emergency planning, but it can be difficult with conventional field surveying methods. Now, a LiDAR-based system is improving the process.

3D holography is reaching new heights, but by much safer and simpler means. A new approach to holographic imaging can create full-color, 3D, layered images using computer-generated holography, a spatial light modulator, and a standard smartphone.

The capabilities of quantum computers and their potential could far surpass other systems. But a first-of-its-kind laser-based computer processing unit setup could go even further than classical, quantum, or super computers.
