In a move to take advantage of the growing Chinese telecommunications market, Lasertron (Burlington, MA) has announced an agreement to double its equity ownershi¥and increase management involvement in Wuhan Telecommunication Devices Company (WTD, Wuhan, PRC). Telecommunications service in China is expected to expand from the present level of two phones per hundred people to 10 phones per hundred people by the year 2000. WTD is the main supplier of fiberoptic components for the Chinese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. It was formed in 1989 as a joint venture between Lasertron and the Wuhan Research Institute. Lasertron produces fiberoptic components and lasers for telecommunications.
