Alcatel to build transatlantic network for Cable Co International
Alcatel Submarine Networks (London, England, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcatel Alstom, Paris, France) was awarded a FF2 billion contract ($400 million) by Cable Co International for the next- generation transatlantic fiberoptic telecommunications cable system, which will link London and New York. Cable Co International is the vehicle through which MFS Communications Company (Omaha, Nebraska) and Cable and Wireless (London, England), will enter into a joint venture to build, operate, and own the system. The system will be completed in 1998 and is expected to be in service in less than 15 months.
