With demand for higher quality and reliability increasing across the photonics industry and components needing to perform in some of the harshest environments manufacturers are raising the bar on production standards. One interesting example is Toptica Eagleyard, who are applying the same rigorous manufacturing processes used for their space-qualified laser diodes to products serving other industries. It’s a challenging approach, but the potential rewards are significant and the company is already scaling up production. At Photonics West, I spoke with the team about where these higher performance demands are coming from, and whether these elevated specifications could soon become the new normal for photonics components.
