At the heart of Shimadzu’s IG-1000, which took a Pittcon Editors’ Choice award, is a comb electrode. It is designed into a disposable cartridge that holds the sample. When the IG-1000 applies AC power to the electrode, the resulting dielectrophoresis effect attracts particles in the sample. When the power stops, the “induced grating”–that is, the grating made up of particles–is released. Smaller particles move away more quickly, and larger particles travel more slowly, enabling measurement.
