The companies are already completing work on a bidirectional module designed for simple fiber applications. The device will transmit and receive signals simultaneously via a single-mode fiber at rates u¥to 622 Mbit/s. The pigtailed module is aimed at the subscriber end of "fiber-in-the-loop" applications and will replace a laser, detector, and coupler at a lower cost and in less space than the individual components. Volume production of the fully qualified device is planned for later this year, although samples will be available in July 1995.
