Dartmouth's Pogue to chair NIH biomedical imaging review panel

Brian Pogue, Professor of Engineering and Dean of Graduate Studies at Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH), was recently named Chair of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)'s new grant review panel for Biomedical Imaging Technology.

NIH's Center for Scientific Review (CSR) receives about 80,000 applications a year and recruits over 17,000 external experts to review them.

The NIH administrates all grant applications through a network of review panels, explains Pogue. The new Biomedical Imaging Technology panel will review applications in optical imaging, ultrasound imaging, x-ray imaging, nuclear medicine, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). "The creation of this panel, which took several years to establish, is important because it shows that biomedical imaging technology has become a large area of research generating a high volume of imaging technology development proposals," he says.

Nominations to the NIH panel underwent rigorous review and were based on "expertise, history of funding, rank, number of recent publications, active grants, history of services, and community support," as well as one’s past participation in reviews and discussions. Professor Pogue will chair the panel for the next two years.
