BIOPHOTONICS: Funding for research and innovation

July 1, 2011
Low-cost and minimally invasive medical diagnostics and therapies. Nanophotonics, optogenetics, ultrathin probes and widefield imaging approaches. Contrast and targeting agents, and rapid biomarker screening. These are the key goals of the U.S. National Science Foundation in its program that will award discretionary grants for basic research and innovation in biophotonics.

Low-cost and minimally invasive medical diagnostics and therapies. Nanophotonics, optogenetics, ultrathin probes and widefield imaging approaches. Contrast and targeting agents, and rapid biomarker screening. These are the key goals of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF; Washington, DC) in its program that will award discretionary grants for basic research and innovation in biophotonics. The application deadline is September 15, 2011.

The estimated total program funding available was cited as $6.6 million, with a ceiling of $600,000 for each award and a maximum of 26 grants. Any entity can apply, including states, counties, cities, townships and special district governments; Native American tribal governments and organizations; institutions of higher education; Historically Black Colleges and Universities; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities; non-profits; for-profits; small businesses; eligible agencies of the federal government; and faith-based or community organizations.

The funding opportunity number is PD-12-7236 (CFDA 47.041); for details, see http://1.usa.gov/kNsyLe.
