Bitplane names its inaugural Excellence Awards winner
Bitplane, an Oxford Instruments company (Belfast, Northern Ireland), has presented Dr. Weimiao Yu with a prize for his winning entry in the company's inaugural Excellence Awards. Yu’s winning entry focused on the analysis of cell protrusions during migration, which is a phenomenon that is not well understood and is thought to play a key role in, for example, immune response and metastasis formation. Steve Chai, sales and application specialist at Bitplane, presented Yu with a commemorative certificate and a MacBook Pro.

Dr. Carlos Ortiz de Solórzano, senior scientist at the Center for Applied Medical Research (Pamplona, Spain) and a judge in Excellence Awards, notes that Yu's work looks at the problem of cell migration from a new perspective that takes into account not only the dynamics of cell migration, but also the way the cell interacts with its environment while migrating. He adds that Yu's method cleanly dissects the movement of the cell from the assembly and disassembly of elongated protrusions, doing so by using a clever image analysis algorithm.
The Excellence Awards focus on identifying and rewarding the best image analysis tool or application. It is open to all commercial and non-commercial entities and individuals. The winner was selected by the public and an expert judging panel made up of de Solórzano, Dr. Simon Watkins, and Dr. Kota Miura.
