PRESS RELEASE

New EXALOS high-performance Broadband Light Sources for OCT applications at 1060-nm spectrum with bandwidth reaching 180 nm.

Zürich, Switzerland, January 19, 2012 – EXALOS AG is introducing a new series of high-performance Broadband Light Sources (spectrally combined Superluminescence Light Emitting Diodes) with ultra-broad optical spectrum centered around 1020 nm, 1040 m and 1075 nm. With typical 3-dB bandwidths well above 100 nm and high optical output powers of more than 15 mW the EBS4C32, EBS8C33 and EBS4C34 are perfectly suited for Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), biomedical imaging, component testing or spectroscopy applications requiring a light source in the near IR. These Broadband Light Sources are offered as turn-key R&D benchtop systems and will be presented at our booth 8322/322 during the BiOS/Photonics West show.

Key Features:

• Center wavelengths of 1020 nm, 1040 nm and 1075 nm matching the water absorption window
• 3-dB optical bandwidth of 105 nm, 150 nm and 180 nm for higher axial resolution
• Output power of 15.5 mW, 16.5 mW and 19.5 mW matching higher MPE levels at 1060 nm

Compared to retinal analysis with SLEDs in the 800 nm regime, examination with spectrally shifted center wavelengths in the 1050 nm region show some distinct features, amongst others:

• deeper penetration into the choroid with choroidal/sclera interface detection
• choroidal penetration independent of fundus pigmentation
• better retinal OCT performance in cataract eyes

With these Broadband Light Source series EBS, our customers are now able to choose between two technologies from EXALOS: SLEDs and spectrally combined SLEDs for spectrometer-based OCT applications and swept sources for high-speed OCT systems.

SLEDs combine features of both Laser Diode (LD) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies: SLED devices exhibit extremely low temporal coherence compared to LDs and very small emission areas compared to LEDs. SLEDs bridge the gap between LDs and LEDs as temporally incoherent and spatially coherent light sources.

EXALOS is committed to our environment. All components and fabrication or assembly processes used for the production of our SLEDs are compliant to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive 2002/95/EC.
