BD Biosciences sets up flow cytometry 'academy'

March 12, 2012
BD Biosciences, part of Becton, Dickinson and Company, and Jamia Hamdard University have set up the BD FACS Academy to train young scientists and researchers on flow cytometry, a laser-based measure of physical and chemical characteristics of cells, cell subsets, DNA, surface antigens, and bacteria.

BD Biosciences, part of Becton, Dickinson and Company (San Jose, CA), and Jamia Hamdard University (New Delhi, India) have set up the BD FACS Academy to train young scientists and researchers on flow cytometry, a laser-based measure of physical and chemical characteristics of cells, cell subsets, DNA, surface antigens, and bacteria. The 3,000-sq-ft. facility in New Delhi will provide flow cytometry training to approximately 300 researchers and clinicians per year.

With the goal of helping to strengthen the healthcare systems in India, the BD FACS Academy is an addition to the company's ongoing education and training programs designed to help increase the capacity of researchers and clinicians on a sustainable basis, says Gary M. Cohen, executive vice president at BD.

The BD FACS Academy will offer short- and long-term courses designed to offer both practical hands-on study and advanced application techniques to help participants meet both current and future needs for research or clinical applications, says Manoj Gopalakrishna, managing director, BD, in India.

The BD FACS Academy is equipped with a range of the company's modern flow cytometer instruments, as well as routine laboratory equipment and its own cell and tissue culture facility.

In India, BD Biosciences has been conducting structured training programs on flow cytometry since 2003, with more than 500 students, researchers, and clinical customers receiving training on the technique to date.
