Noncontact IR thermometer proves accurate in pediatric clinical tests

Sept. 10, 2008
SEPTEMBER 10, 2008 -- In a clinical study at the Second Children's Clinic of the University of Milan (Italy), Thermofocus 5-in-1 from American Scientific Resources Inc. (Weston, FL), accurately and safely measured body temperature in infants and children. Without touching the skin, and in less than one second, the FDA approved device reads temperature from the temporal artery on the forehead. It is the "first and only non-contact infrared clinical thermometer in the world," the company says.

SEPTEMBER 10, 2008 -- In a clinical study, Thermofocus 5-in-1, the "first and only non-contact infrared clinical thermometer in the world," was proven to accurately and safely measure body temperature in infants and children. Without touching the skin, and in less than one second, the patented, FDA approved Thermofocus 5-in-1 takes a temperature reading when from the temporal artery on the forehead. It promises a non-invasive, non-irritating, trauma-free experience to the child as well as the parent or caregiver.

The study involved 90 inpatient and ambulant children at the Second Children's Clinic of the University of Milan (Italy), and tested the device's ability to measure temperature at three sites: forehead, navel, and axilla. Its conclusion states, "The data demonstrate that measuring body temperature with a non-contact infrared radiation device is completely safe and provides correct, reliable measurement of body temperature at different body sites without skin contact. This last feature is particularly advantageous for ambulatories and emergency department services where modes of transmission of disease need to be strictly controlled."

The device is distributed in the U.S. by Kidz-Med Inc., a subsidiary of American Scientific Resources Inc. (Weston, FL), whose CEO is Dr. Christopher F. Tirotta. Dr. Tirotta also serves as Director of Cardiac Anesthesia for the Congenital Heart Institute of Miami Children's Hospital and Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children -- as well as Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He notes, "I am personally responsible" for bringing this device to the USA. "Recommended by doctors and pediatricians throughout the UK, Europe and Asia, the Thermofocus was used by medical personnel in Asia during the SARS epidemic. Other infrared and digital thermometers that take oral, rectal, ear and armpit readings are no comparison to this, the first and only at-distance, non-invasive clinical thermometer in the world."

Thermofocus is available in 6000 Walgreen's drug stores and online at KidzMed.com, Walgreens.com, CVS.com, and babiesRus.com among others.
