Mid-InfraRed Technologies for Health and the Environment (MIRTHE; Princeton, NJ) will host an Investment Focus Group Workshop on medical applications for mid-IR technologies at Princeton University on October 12. The conference will explore promising biophotonic applications such as human breath monitoring, noninvasive glucose sensing, cancer diagnostics, and environmental health monitoring, and will highlight key molecules of interest and address market impact.

This event is intended to engage a diverse and multi-disciplinary group of people to help speed the adoption of emerging technologies by defining the market applications and opportunities. Joseph Montemarano, the executive director of the center, says that the organizers are working with the Cleveland Clinic to increase visibility and understanding among clinicians and other medical personnel. And they are reaching out to venture capitalists and other investors interested in the medical/healthcare field.

The first investment conference organized by the center took place in fall 2010 and focused on general applications in the mid-IR. The audience of the meeting will include investors, clinicians, industry, faculty and students. The center is known for its work on mid-IR components and systems, many of which are based on quantum cascade lasers that can be tailored to cover the entire mid-IR wavelength range (3-17 mm).
