Strategies in Biophotonics, www.strategiesinbiophotonics.com, a two-day conference and exhibition with a pre-conference workshop, has issued a call for papers with a deadline of January 10, 2014.

The conference is designed to help optics- and photonics-based device and system developers cover all the important bases as they think about development toward commercialization.

Besides demonstrating the critical role of biomedical optics and photonics in life sciences, the program will highlight key examples of clinical and scientific needs, and discuss requirements for development of technology and application discoveries to meet those needs. Topics will include funding, business models, collaboration, and regulatory issues—because, as advisory board member Aydogan Ozcan (UCLA and Holomic LLC) pointed out, technologists are inclined to overlook the fact that “the technology is almost the easy part; even more important are the team and the business model.”

The event will be held September 9-11, 2014, at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. Find details at http://s36.a2zinc.net/clients/pennwell/SIB2014/Public/Content.aspx?ID=37576.

Strategies in Biophotonics seeks to fill a gap. Conferences focused on biomedical optics and photonics offer a limited number of sessions related to market considerations. Some scientific and medical conferences (the American Society for Cell Biology and the American Academy for Ophthalmology annual meetings are good examples) discuss the importance of photonics-based approaches. And other events, focused on biomedical device design and manufacture, or technology entrepreneurship, include presentations by photonics innovators. But until now, there’s been no event dedicated to the development of biophotonics for transition to commercial life sciences markets.

The conference organizers welcome your input.
