Falling on the heels of three years in business, 89 North (Burlington, VT) has won a 2011 Prism Award in the Life Sciences and Biophotonics category for one of their recently launched products. The awards were presented at a gala banquet on January 25 at SPIE Photonics West 2012.

The company's Heliophor pumped-phosphor light engine for quantitative fluorescence imaging in several biomedical applications, including cancer research, garnered the award. The light engine provides a new alternative to arc lamps, metal halides, and LED light sources, according to SPIE.

SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs notes that more companies submitted applications for this year's awards than ever before, also noting that "innovations bubbling up from smaller companies really demonstrates the vitality of the photonics industry."
