FEI wraps TILL Photonics acquisition

Nov. 14, 2011
Imaging and analysis instrumentation maker FEI has acquired live-cell fluorescence microscopy instrumentation maker TILL Photonics, including a key correlative microscopy technology in cell biology that will couple high-performance light and electron microscopy.

Imaging and analysis instrumentation maker FEI (NASDAQ: FEIC; Hillsboro, OR) has acquired live-cell fluorescence microscopy instrumentation maker TILL Photonics (Munich, Germany), including a key correlative microscopy technology in cell biology that will couple high-performance light and electron microscopy. This new association will enable TILL Photonics to accelerate its growth path into the global life science market.

Founded by Professor Rainer Uhl of Munich University in 1993, TILL Photonics has a long tradition as an independent microscopy company. In 2009, TOPTICA Photonics became a major shareholder of the company, together with Dr. Frank Lison and Professor Uhl, focusing on technologies like the Andromeda spinning disc scanner and the More fully automated microscopy platform, growing the company to approximately $8 million in 2011.

Dr. Frank Lison, TILL Photonics president, says that the acquistion by FEI will open up new market opportunities for TILL's high-resolution technologies.
