Teledyne Dalsa secures earth observation contract with Denel Spaceteq

Oct. 7, 2015
Custom multispectral sensors are scheduled for design and manufacture by 2017.

Teledyne Dalsa (Waterloo, ON, Canada) will partner with Denel Spaceteq (Stellenbosch, South Africa), which provides satellite systems to the South African, African, and international aerospace market, to develop a new multispectral image sensor for an advanced earth observation application. The aim of the multimillion dollar development project is to return high-resolution images by 2019 when the launch is scheduled.

The Earth Observation application will contribute to the African Resource Management Constellation (ARMC) forged between Algeria, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. The newly obtained images will enable acquisition of data for applications such as agriculture, crop and forestry management, urban planning, environment, and disaster monitoring.

Teledyne Dalsa creates miniaturized multispectral sensors at various resolutions by placing advanced dichroic filters directly in the imaging area; as a result, a single device can contain multiple imaging areas tailored to different multispectral bandwidths. Denel Spaceteq provides high-performance small and medium size satellites and related systems. It was specifically created in answer to the South African Space Policy and Strategy that is intended to spur the growth of the local South African space industry. For more info, see www.spaceteq.co.za.
