AMS Technologies laser module withstands harsh environments

The RIO Grande provides up to 2 W of power in a single-frequency laser module that combines an external cavity laser (ECL) with a low-noise EDFA and uses proprietary planar PLANEX technology. Designed to withstand harsh environments, uses include acoustic and interferometric sensing, lidar, high-resolution metrology, and RF and microwave photonics. It provides 0.1 to 1 W of power over the eye-safe regions of the C-band (1530–1565 nm).

PRESS RELEASE
1 Watt and more Narrow Linewidth & Low Phase Noise Laser Module
Lutterworth UK, 27th October 2010 – The RIO Grande is an high power, up to 2 Watts, single frequency laser module that combines Rio’s high performance External Cavity Laser (ECL) with a high performance low noise EDFA. It was developed to provide end users with robust solutions for harsh environments in easy-to-use form factors for usage in acoustic and interferometric sensing, LIDAR, high-resolution metrology and RF & microwave photonics applications.
Available from AMS Technologies Leicestershire, UK, the Rio Grande module provides 0.1 to 1 W of optical power over the eye safe regions of the C-band (1530-1565nm). The semiconductor-based laser and the industry-proven CATV EDFA ensure reduced sensitivity to mechanical and acoustic vibrations, perfectly matched to withstand harsh environmental conditions while preserving low power consumption and system heat dissipation.
This laser design is based on RIO’s proprietary planar technology (PLANEX™) and consists of a gain chip and a planar lightwave circuit including waveguide with Bragg grating, forming a laser cavity with significant advantages. The lasers feature very narrow spectral linewidth, low phase and frequency noise, low RIN and high stability and reliability.
