Corning, NY. April 16, 2003. Corning Tropel Corp. has been named exclusive worldwide distributor for the Optical Dimensions, LLC Lasercheck non-contact surface roughness measurement gage. As exclusive distributor, Corning Tropel will market the product as the Tropel Lasercheck.

The Tropel Lasercheck uses laser-based technology to measure the average roughness (Ra) of a variety of materials, including metals, magnetic media, plastics, and ceramics. It is available as an automated system for 100 percent in-process inspection, or as a recently introduced portable hand-held system for simple push-button measurements.

"Corning Tropel can now offer customers a low-cost automated or portable solution for measuring surface roughness in shop floor environments," said John Bruning, president, Corning Tropel. "Adding the Tropel Lasercheck to the current family of surface form metrology instruments will further enhance our metrology capabilities."

Tropel Lasercheck is a durable system with no fragile moving parts. Its rugged aluminum block construction can withstand years of rough production floor use and offers low-cost operation with no stylus tips or mechanical parts to wear out. This eliminates the constant maintenance and calibration costs required with the use of contact stylus gages. The easy-to-use system provides single measurements in less than 0.5 seconds. It has fixtures for simple alignment on flat and cylindrical surfaces, or can be set on a surface to measure instantly. The portable handheld system features a large, easy-to-read LCD display and a compact portable head that weighs less than one pound.

"The speed and reliability of the Tropel Lasercheck allows users to control quality on 100 percent of products or parts in the middle of the manufacturing process without sacrificing productivity," said J. Glenn Valliant, managing partner, Optical Dimensions, LLC. "This allows users to increase yield and control production to tighter tolerances."

Tropel Lasercheck works on any material or color. An interface port on the control box and optional cabling and software are included to transfer measurement data to applicable software. Upgraded electronics are available that allow complete automation of measurements in high-volume surface critical operations.
