• SPIE Announces 2004 Officers and Directors

    Bellingham, WA, January 14, 2004. James Bilbro was elected by SPIE members to serve as the 2004 President. Malgorzata Kujawinska was elected to serve as the Vice President. Paul F. McManamon was elected to serve as Secretary. Robert E. Fischer was elected to serve as the 2004 Treasurer. Ralph B. James, Gloria Putnam, Bruce J. Tromberg and Ichirou Yamaguchi were elected by SPIE members to serve as 2004-2006 Directors of the Society.

    Bellingham, WA, January 14, 2004. James Bilbro was elected by SPIE members to serve as the 2004 President. Malgorzata Kujawinska was elected to serve as the Vice President. Paul F. McManamon was elected to serve as Secretary. Robert E. Fischer was elected to serve as the 2004 Treasurer. Ralph B. James, Gloria Putnam, Bruce J. Tromberg and Ichirou Yamaguchi were elected by SPIE members to serve as 2004-2006 Directors of the Society. Guillermo H. Kaufmann was selected as the appointed Director for the 2004 term.

    Assistant Director & Chief Technician for Optics at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) NASA, Bilbro earned a MSE from the University of Alabama and completed course work and residency requirements for a PhD in Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. His technical interests include nickel replication of x-ray mirrors, diamond turning, ion figuring, binary optic fabrication, long path length metrology, and coherent lidar applications.

    Kujawinska is a full Professor of Applied Optics at the Department of Mechatronics, Warsaw University of Technology and Head of the Optical Engineering Division at the Institute of Micromechanics and Photonics, WUT. She earned a PhD in Optical Engineering and a DSc in Applied Optics from Warsaw University of Technology.

    McManamon is Senior Scientist, Infrared Sensors, for the Air Force Research Laboratory. McManamon received his BS in Physics from John Carroll University and his MS in Physics and his PhD in Physics from Ohio State University. His technical activities and interests include sensors of all types, especially laser based sensors, all EO systems, especially laser-based EO systems, optical phased arrays and aerospace & aviation.

    Fischer holds a MS in Optics from the University of Rochester and is President and CEO of OPTICS 1, Inc. His technical interests are optical design and engineering, in particular lens design, optical component and system manufacturing, assembly and testing.

    Ralph B. James, the Associate Laboratory Director for the Energy, Environment and National Security Directorate, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) earned a BS degree in Engineering Physics (with Highest Honors) at the Univ. of Tennessee, a MS degree in Physics from Georgia Institute of Technology, a MS degree in Applied Physics and a PhD degree in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology.

    Senior Researcher for the General Electric Global Research Center, Harding received a B.A. at Rider College and a M.S. in Optics from the University of Rochester. His technical interests include optical based metrology, interferometry, opto-mechanical design, optical 3D sensors, and laser dimensional sensors.
