SPIE announces newly-elected 2007 officers and directors

September 6, 2006, Bellingham, WA--SPIE—The International Society for Optical Engineering's 2006 President, Paul F. McManamon has announced election results for terms beginning January 1, 2007.

September 6, 2006, Bellingham, WA--SPIE—The International Society for Optical Engineering's 2006 President, Paul F. McManamon has announced election results for terms beginning January 1, 2007.


The 2007 Society Officers:
Brian Culshaw was elected by SPIE members to serve as the 2007 President. Culshaw is a Professor of Optoelectronics at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, UK. He received his B.Sc. in Physics and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University College London. An SPIE Fellow, Culshaw lists some of his technical interests as guided wave optics, fibers, waveguides—especially for sensing and measurement and semiconductors—microwave and optical. Culshaw is also the Founding Editor of the International Journal of Optoelectronics.

Kevin G. Harding was elected by SPIE members to serve as the 2007 President-Elect. He is the senior researcher and project leader for the General Electric Global Research Center. Harding received his B.A. degree in Physics/Philosophy from Rider College, Lawrenceville, NJ, and his M.S. degree in Optics from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. Harding is an SPIE Fellow, and his technical interests include precision infrared ellipsometry and reflectometry to high speed vibration analysis of turbine structures using holography and Moiré techniques.

Maria J. Yzuel was elected by SPIE members to serve as the 2007 Vice-President. Yzuel is a Professor with the Department of Physics, Group of Optics, Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB), Spain. She received her Ph. D. in Physics from the Universidad of Zaragoza, Spain. An SPIE Fellow, she lists some of her technical interests as diffraction image theory, image quality evaluation, apodization, applications to photolithography optical pattern recognition, color information in correlators, design of filters and liquid crystal devices.


Brian A. Lula was elected by SPIE members to serve as the 2007 Secretary/Treasurer. Lula is the president and CEO of PI Physik Instrumente LP. He graduated in mechanical engineering from Centennial College, Ontario, Canada, and completed advanced engineering courses at the University of Michigan. His technical interests include micro and nanopositioning technologies, telescope mechanical/optical system design and fabrication, astronomical imaging, optical manufacturing and testing.


The newly elected Society Directors, three-year terms, 2007-2009:
James G. Grote, Senior Electronics Research Engineer, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Eric G. Johnson, Associate Director for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications, University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Werner Jüptner, Professor, University of Bremen, Faculty of Physics/ Electrotechnology
Director, BIAS – Bremen Institute of Applied Beam Technology, Bremen, Germany.

Mitsuo Takeda, Professor, Laboratory for Information Photonics and Wave Signal Processing, Department of Information and Communication Engineering, The University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan.


Appointed Director, one-year term, 2007:
Seung-Han Park, Professor, College of Science/Physics Dept, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea.
