December 2, 2008--The European Commission (EC) added two more projects for photonics components and systems R&D under the 7th research framework programme (FP7). The two programs total nearly $114 million dollars (90 million Euros) for the calendar years 2009-2010.

December 2, 2008--The European Commission (EC) added two more projects for photonics components and systems R&D under the 7th research framework programme (FP7). The two programs total nearly $114 million dollars (90 million Euros) for the calendar years 2009-2010.

An article in EEtimes France says that the first call is a general photonics call covering areas such as communication, lighting and light sources, biophotonics, imaging, and a section for integrated components for high-power lasers, including fiber lasers and diode lasers. A total of 60 million Euros has been allocated for project work, and the call closes on April 1, 2009.

The second call is more specific and covers organic photonics such as OLEDs as well as other disruptive photonic technologies such as metamaterials and plasmonics. For this, the EC has allocated 30 million Euros and the call opens on July 31, 2009 and closes on November 3, 2009.
