Nortel Networks, identified recently by the Dell'Oro Group as the industry leader in the global metro DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) market, is now shipping OPTera Metro 5200 Multiservice Platform Release 4.0, a 10 gigabits-per-second (Gbps) capable Optical Metro platform designed to make metro networks more efficient and easier to deploy while enabling delivery of high-bandwidth services in metropolitan areas.

Nortel Networks, which continues to bolster its next generation Optical Metro portfolio, had nearly a 37 percent share of the global DWDM market in third quarter 2001, according to the Dell'Oro Group. Nortel Networks alos recently announced an OPTera Metro 5200 award from Korea's Dacom. Nortel Networks has also recently announced Optical Metro awards from SBC Communications, KDDI, TELUS Quebec, Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company, China Unicom, and ACCA Networks.

Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 Multiservice Platform Release 4.0 provides customers with 10 gigabit DWDM transport and services. A full carrier-class product, OPTera Metro 5200 Release 4.0 offers carriers and enterprises a variety of benefits, including increased network integration and efficiency; improved reliability; faster 'time-to-market;' and a simplified, open network architecture.

Mike Whitaker, chief operating officer of Memphis Networx, already a Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 customer, said, We selected OPTera Metro 5200 for its open architecture and 10G transport option, and look forward to upgrading to Release 4.0. We expect this scalable, reliable solution to provide us with the additional bandwidth we require to support us for years to come.

Nortel Networks also plans to make its new OPTera Metro cabinet solution generally available in December 2001. An option for OPTera Metro 5200 Release 4.0, OPTera Metro Cabinet solution is designed with reduced space and implementation requirements to provide quick and simple deployment on enterprise campuses, in service provider central offices, and in co-location facilities -- in as little as four hours, compared to typical deployments which can exceed 30 hours. It is a freestanding solution for ease of upgrade and relocation.

As enterprises demand more bandwidth and better services, carriers are expected to meet those needs quickly and reliably, said Brian McFadden, president, Optical Metro, Nortel Networks. Nortel Networks continues to lead the metro market, providing our customers with competitive advantage by giving them more options to meet a range of requirements, and by allowing them to easily and cost-effectively tailor individual solutions.

OPTera Metro 5200 Release 4.0 includes software enhancements to simplify deployment and configuration, and new hardware with per wavelength scalability up to 10 Gbps for increased bandwidth and support of SONET/SDH, OC-192, STM64 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet applications. Release 4.0 reduces costs and enables improved reliability with additional protection alternatives and tools to minimize optical power loss. Its open architecture also enables seamless migration and upgrades. With 80 Gigabits of traffic per shelf, OPTera Metro 5200 Release 4.0 offers one of the highest densities available today in a DWDM metro solution.
