Amsterdam, May 15, 2003 Royal Philips Electronics has secured an order for its polymer light emitting diode (PolyLED) technology from L-3 Communications' Display Systems Division (Alpharetta, Ga.), an integrator of avionic displays. Under the terms of this agreement, Philips will deliver customized PolyLED display modules for integration into cockpit instrumentation systems for both commercial and military aircraft by the end of 2005.

Philips has taken a leadership role in the commercialization of PolyLED. This light-emitting technology offers a myriad of benefits to the avionics sector and beyond, including superior readability under various lighting conditions, wide viewing angle (greater than 170 degrees), and extreme contrast and brightness capabilities. Heralded for its thin and compact form factor, PolyLED consumes less power and can operate under extreme temperature ranges. These benefits, coupled with Philips' demonstrated ability to cost-effectively manufacture these displays at high yields, makes PolyLED an ideal solution for addressing today's stringent, yet cost-conscious, avionics market.

"Philips is already a demonstrated leader in providing active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) technologies for both civil and military avionics applications," noted Peter Hopper, CEO for Philips' Mobile Displays Systems' Group. "This latest design win not only further entrenches the company's position in this key sector, but also reinforces the avionics industry's growing confidence in our mobile display portfolio, which delivers the reliability, quality and optical performance needed to address this industry's exacting requirements."

According to Bob McGill, President of L-3 Communications, Display Systems Division, today's announcement is the latest example of the L-3/Philips collaborative effort aimed at deploying the most advanced display technology in a variety of avionics applications. "Philips continues to deliver the high-performance and reliability that we demand for our state-of-the-art avionics products. Philips' ability to leverage their volume manufacturing capabilities to deliver this advanced technology-customized to meet our exacting standards, as well as those of our customers-were significant factors behind this recent collaboration."

The acceptance of Philip's PolyLED technology continues to grow across the multiple markets it serves. This past January, the company announced that it had been shipping mass-produced PolyLED modules for commercial use. Philips' AMLCD technology can be found on National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) space shuttles, as well as on widely recognized commercial and military aircraft.
