Anaheim, CA., April 18, 2003. Newport's MRSI 5005-OPTO ultra-high precision assembly work cell won the VISION Award for best in the Optoelectronics category at APEX 2003. The VISION Awards are presented each year at APEX by SMT Magazine to recognize companies whose products best demonstrate innovative advancement in technology.

The 5005 OPTO 5-micron eutectic capability for assembly of laser submounts set it apart and above other commercial assembly systems. Extremely precise placements are achieved with a thermally and mechanically stable platform offering fast settling times and +/- 5 microns (0.0002 inch) or better placement accuracy required for photonic applications.

Unique capabilities include a heated assembly station with fast closed-loop temperature ramping and controlled contact force for placing small delicate InP and GaAs die with "no touch" surface and edge features and small thin preforms. The equipment combines high speed and 5 micron accuracy for repeatable, precise, high-quality assembly of these delicate devices.

"We're delighted that our 5005 OPTO received this prestigious award" Kevin Crofton, Vice President and general Manager of Newport's Advanced Packaging and Automation Systems Division, stated. "The future of practical optoelectronics technology depends on advanced and proven systems like our 5005 OPTO. Once again, Newport leads the way in enabling technologies that are making tomorrow's advances possible today."
