Irvine, CA, October 2, 2003. Newport has appointed Dr. Jason Eichenholz to the newly created position of Senior Research Market and Technology Manager. In this position, Eichenholz will manage Newport's relationship with the photonics research community, with emphasis on new product identification and technology roadmapping, and support for customers in demanding and cutting-edge applications.

According to Gary Spiegel, Newport Vice President of Worldwide Sales & Marketing, "In recent years, much of our growth has stemmed from success in providing integrated solutions to commercial applications. However, we recognize that the bedrock underlying this is our leadership position as a supplier of technically innovative products to support fundamental and applied research efforts. With his strong research background and extensive technical credentials, Dr. Eichenholz will now act as a key information conduit between Newport and the research community. We believe this will enhance the exchange of ideas and information, resulting in even better support for our research customers and in highly targeted product development efforts to meet their specific future needs."

Eichenholz received his Ph.D. in Optical Sciences and Engineering from CREOL/School of Optics at the University of Central Florida in 1998. He has been actively involved in laser and optical research and product development for more than 10 years, and has written and delivered over 25 papers at conferences and in refereed journals in the areas of fiber optics and solid state, femtosecond, and frequency-agile lasers. He holds four issued US Patents on new types of solid-state lasers and has several more outstanding.

Eichenholz has managed several large projects and has served as the principal investigator for Air Force and DARPA STTR's and SBIR's. He has previously held management positions in several photonics-based companies. Eichenholz will report directly to David Rossi, Director of Marketing at Newport.
