Hong Kong, January 28, 2003. ZBD Displays(ZBD)and Varitronix International have announced an agreement for the collaborative development of ZBD's Zenithal Bistable display technology. Under the agreement, ZBD and Varitronix will collaborate on the design and specification of equipment to fabricate displays incorporating ZBD's technology on Varitronix's existing STN production lines.

Backed by an extensive patent portfolio, ZBD's technology allows images to be kept on a display indefinitely without the use of any power and without image degradation, even under the most severe mechanical stresses. This characteristic offers enormous power savings for handheld devices, extending battery life and enabling the size and weight of the devices to be substantially reduced.

ZBD's technology also delivers superior contrast and brightness and very wide viewing angles. The readability of its displays under wide lighting conditions, coupled with zero power between updates means that ZBD offers the foremost solution for high resolution displays on which information is kept unchanged for extended periods of time.

Established in July 2000, ZBD Displays Limited is the first spin-out from the UK's Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (now QinetiQ). ZBD Displays Limited has a proprietary technology for grating aligned Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) that is backed by an extensive and fast growing patent portfolio and allows images to be kept on a display indefinitely without the use of any power, or after the power is turned off.

ZBD displays offer power savings, especially in applications with low image update rates, thereby extending the life of the batteries and/or allowing device designers to substantially reduce their size, weight and cost. In addition, ZBD's technology enables high complexity displays with superior contrast and brightness.

The combination of zero power between image updates with high information content and suitability for flexible or standard plastic substrates means that ZBD is placed at the heart of future handheld consumer devices. For products such as electronic readers or e-books ZBD displays can be fabricated with superior readability; for products such as smart cards and electronic labels ZBD displays offer the foremost solution for displaying data for extended periods without image degradation.
