Wilmington, DE and Ewing, NJ, December 13, 2002. DuPont Displays and Universal Display Corporation have agreed to create a new generation of soluble OLED materials and technology. UDC and DuPont have also executed a cross-license agreement, under which DuPont will make an initial payment to UDC and pay UDC a running royalty for products sold that utilize UDC's background.j
Based on groundbreaking work in phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) technology by UDC and expertise in solution-based processing by DuPont, it is expected that the new OLED materials developed by the parties will have significant performance and cost advantages, thus enabling OLEDs to capture an increased market share in the fast growing $30 billon flat panel display market. The collaborators expect to use a third party subcontractor to manufacture materials resulting from this agreement.
The joint development agreement establishes an important intellectual property collaboration aimed at combining the best elements of both small molecule OLED and solution processible OLED research. This technical approach builds on the performance advantages of phosphorescent small molecule materials and marries it to solution-based application methods, such as ink jet printing, to produce a phosphorescent, printable OLED (P2OLED). DuPont intends to use the results of this strategic alliance to expand its OLED manufacturing capability. UDC, in turn, will have the exclusive right to license the results of the collaboration to third parties.
Universal Display Corporation is a developer of OLED technologies. Its patented PHOLED technology is up to four times more efficient than other OLED technology platforms. It has over 400 patents issued and pending worldwide in key areas of OLED technology. It is collaborating with a network of world class organizations to penetrate the electronic flat panel display market, including a long-standing relationship for innovative OLED research with Princeton University and the University of Southern California; a joint development agreement with Sony Corporation for OLED television monitors; a joint development agreement with Samsung SDI focusing on portable OLED devices; a strategic relationship for the commercialization and production of its proprietary high efficiency OLED materials with PPG Industries, Inc. of Pittsburgh, PA, USA; and a partnership with AIXTRON AG of Aachen Germany for the development and production of the next generation of OLED production equipment using Universal Display Corporation's proprietary organic vapor phase deposition (OVPD) technology.
Universal Display Corporation is located in the Princeton Crossroads Corporate Center, Ewing, N.J., minutes away from its research partner at Princeton University. Its 21,000 sq. ft. facility includes a pilot production line, as well as technology development and transfer facilities. The state-of-the-art facility has been designed to further technology development and transfer to manufacturing partners and work with customers to develop products to meet their needs for electronic flat panel displays.
