Bellingham, WA, December 9, 2002. SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering announced the first Photonics Europe meeting planned for 26-30 April 2004 in Strasbourg, France at the Strasbourg Palais de Congres. The biennial international event will showcase optics and photonics technologies and research as well as the people, institutions, and companies leading development in this rapidly growing area of science.

The content and structure of the meeting will be developed by a group of Europe's leading experts. Photonics Europe will offer an international congress with educational programmes, workshops, plenaries, internationally known speakers, emerging technologies, and a product and services exhibition.

The goal of Photonics Europe is to connect science, engineering, applications, and technology in a way that speeds the transfer of knowledge from the experimental laboratory to productive technology for industry and useful applications for society as a whole. SPIE will work in concert with many European and international organizations to accomplish this goal. The Societe Francaise d'Optique (SFO), Groupement des Industries Francaises de l'Optique (GIFO), Societa Italiana di Ottica e Fotonica (SIOF), and the European Optical Society (EOS) are lending early support. Also, the city of Strasbourg and the Alsace and Baden-Wurttemberg regions together with the Rhenaphotonics regional cluster and the local Regional Development Agency ADA will assist in making the event productive and pleasurable for participants.

Europe is fast becoming a global leader in many areas of optics and photonics technology. With new developments coming out of the Framework VI funding as well as cutting edge research in many universities, laboratories and companies in Europe, the need to connect that research to new applications demands cross fertilization and an interdisciplinary approach. Photonics Europe will provide such an event and will provide people from the Americas and Asia an opportunity to come to Europe and see the rapid advances that are taking place across the continent.
