Northro¥Grumman (Bethpage, NY) will lead a team to develo¥and test a prototype gamma-ray-based inspection system for luggage or packages. The Contraband Detection System (CDS) is being developed under an 18-month, $4.6 million contract from the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The CDS will use gamma resonance to generate low-level gamma rays that are focused on objects inside large cargo containers passing by the detector. Contraband chemicals exhibit distinct absorption patterns, which, when detected, will be indicated to the operator. Both 2-D and 3-D images of an item can be displayed so an operator can "examine" an object in detail without removal from the container.
