MOCVD makes multiplewavelength 2D array of verticalcavity lasers, which would be useful for wavelengthdivisionmultiplexing communications systems, according to K. Iga and others at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Yokohama, Japan). Metalorganic chemicalvapor deposition (MOCVD) was used to create an array of GaInAs/GaAs verticalcavity surfaceemitting lasers (VCSELs) with center wavelengths varying by u¥to 45 nm. The researchers grew the lasers on a substrate patterned with mesas of varying diameters. The wavelength of each laser was controlled by the mesa diameter. Current threshold of the devices was as low as 3 mA and voltage threshold was as low as 2.5 V. (Electron. Lett. 30(23), 10 Nov. 1994, p. 1947)
