Alcatel chosen to head Hermes Europe Railtel network project

Hermes Europe Railtel BV (HER, Brussels, Belguium) has selected multinational communications giant Alcatel (Paris, France) as project manager of the deployment of the HER 55-city European network.

Part of a ten-year, $647 million project, the four-year contract is worth approximately $337 million. Alcatel will bear responsibility for the network build-out, including equipment and systems installation, testing, and maintenance. It is also designated as the exclusive supplier of synchronous-digital-hierarchy transmission equipment for the project. The network is scheduled to connect 12 cities in five countries by mid-1996.
