Flat-panel displays challenge CRTs
Cathode-ray-tube (CRT) based monitors represent 99.3% of the total US desktop-computer-monitor market with revenues of $5.5 billion, according to the research report US Deskto¥Computer Monitor Market published by Frost & Sullivan (Mountain View, CA). Revenues for 1996 for desktop-based flat-panel displays (FPDs) were $38.6 million but are expected to rise to $3.5 billion by 2000. "As of mid-1997 FPDs are the hottest products in the desktop-monitor industry," said analyst Rufus Connell, "with almost every major monitor manufacturer introducing or having announced plans to market FPD monitors.
