    Erich Ippen, Elihu Thompson Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA), has been elected 1998 vice president of the Optical Society of America (OSA; Washington, DC). Also elected as at-large members of the 1998 board of directors were Connie J. Chang-Hasnain--professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at the University of California (Berkeley, CA), Peter F. Moulton--senior vice president for corporate development at Schwart¥Electro-Optics (Bedford, MA), and Eric Van Stryland--professor of physics and electrical and computer engineering at the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL).
