In the introduction to his Annual Technology Review on page 111 senior editor John Wallace notes that the breadth of subject matter covered by Laser Focus World is so broad that… “just as no one term covers the whole field [of optoelectronics], no one assorted selection of a year’s technical highlights can either. Such an assortment can, however, at least serve as a nod to the quantity and quality of this year’s developments in the study and application of light.”

Even within the space limits imposed on him, Wallace’s review covers a staggering array of leading-edge developments in photonics and optoelectronics: from the realms of basic science-such as the laser systems used in fusion research-to the potentially commonplace applications of photonics-like automatically switchable wavelength-selective coatings that could significantly reduce air-conditioning costs. Whatever your specific area of interest, one of Wallace’s picks will certainly intrigue you.

A similar challenge faced associate editor Gail Overton in putting together a preview of next month’s Photonics West conference. To be held in San Jose, CA, Jan. 22-27, 2005, the conference and exhibition covers more or less the entire field of photonics and optoelectronics, so its program is equally as broad as the content of Laser Focus World. But with the help of the conference chairs and others, Overton highlights a few of the leading papers to be presented during the event starting on page 121.

    …and more

The emerging industrial-laser market in China, and “real-world” opportunities in nanophotonics will be two of the highlights at the 15th annual marketplace seminar presented by Laser Focus World and Strategies Unlimited at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose during Photonics West. The seminar provides business leaders, investors, and technology analysts with the only applications-oriented review of worldwide laser markets, coupled with discussions of key business and technology trends.
