Noncommodity flat-panel displays to top $1 billion
According to a study commissioned by the US Display Consortium (San Jose, CA), new opportunities for flat-panel-display manufacturers in noncommodity markets will exceed $1.5 billion over the next several years. This represents more than 60 million unit shipments between 1998 and 2002. Noncommodity markets are those that do not include portable or desktop PC products or communications devices, such as cellular phones and pagers. According to Stanford Resources (San Jose, CA), which produced the report, the keys to staying competitive in the expanding market will include product diversity and capability to infiltrate nontraditional applications, such as addition of displays to appliances.
