Spectra-Physics Lasers ships 500th Millennia laser

March 1, 1998
Less than two years after introducing the Millennia laser, Spectra-Physics Lasers (Mountain View, CA) has shipped its 500th unit to the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI; La Jolla, CA). Scientists there will use the laser to study eye diseases. The Millennia will be one of three lasers powering a two-photon confocal microscope used by TSRI researchers to view living tissue u¥to 400 µm thick. The Millennia will be one of three lasers powering a two-photon confocal microscope used by TSRI researchers to view living tissue u¥to 400 µm thick. With its solid-state technology, the Millennia reduces the heat and vibration caused by older, water-cooled lasers, which shake the microscope and affect the researchers` ability to view the living tissue.
