The Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL; Orlando, FL) opened a stand-alone school of optics in September at the University of Central Florida. The Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL; Orlando, FL) opened a stand-alone school of optics in September at the University of Central Florida. This is only the third optics school in the country, after those at the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY) and the University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ). Until now, CREOL had been a research center in a group of academic units, and hiring decisions required approval from the college`s dean. The new school has the authority to hire faculty and develop graduate programs. It will be housed in an 84,000-sq ft facility built two years ago and will hold an inaugural conference in January.
